SKY LAKE WILDLIFE
Sky Lake harbors a rich diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes
and other wildlife. Cypress trees provide numerous cavities for birds such as prothonotary
warblers and wood ducks and mammals such as black bears. American alligators thrive
in such habitats. Cypress-tupelo swamps are among the world’s most productive ecosystems.
Floodwaters constantly provide fresh nutrients that fuel rich plant growth and insect
productivity that feeds many wildlife species. The sounds of crow-sized pileated
woodpeckers hammering on the hollow trunks of ancient cypress trees echo through
the Sky Lake swamp.
